Emily Haigh
Winner of 10 Best Actress awards and an accomplished filmmaker, Emily Haigh talks to us about working both in front of and behind the camera, the best ways to get your work out in the world and her love of going to the cinema.
When did you know you wanted to work in film?
Apparently when I was very young, about four years old, I used to watch films and point at the TV and go "I want to do that!". I did a few acting classes after I left school, but never went to drama school - I couldn't afford it!
You're both an actress and filmmaker - what made you want to move behind the camera?
I think any actor will tell you that they don't like waiting for auditions to come to them! I'd done a few projects but wanted to write something for myself, so just made my own short film and it sort of took off from there!
What do you think is the best way to get your work out there?
Film festivals, definitely. There are so many that cater to all kinds of films, particularly short films. Also social media is really useful for promoting you work - sharing trailers, info on festivals, building an audience, etc.
What are some of your favourite films?
I guess this is kind of a generic answer, but I love Disney! But I also love The Conjuring, Fast & Furious... Horror films too, especially at the cinema. I think they need that kind of setting - my speakers at home aren't very good! I love the cinema experience because that's what it is, it's an experience, you just cannot get that same feeling at home or anywhere else.
Who are some actors and filmmakers you'd like to work with?
Kathryn Bigelow is definitely one! As for actors - Toni Collette, Joaquin Phoenix... Oh, and Christopher McQuarrie is an amazing director!
